They choose when they will work. With substitutes in such high demand, there will be opportunities to work nearly every day of the school year. As an added benefit, all substitute teachers are able to join the New York State Retirement System, building credit toward retirement.

Because of the flexible schedule, substitute teacher positions are beneficial for many people. This includes graduate students and anyone looking for part-time work, since it provides an opportunity to earn extra money based on your schedule. For recent graduates, becoming a substitute teacher in the Ken-Ton School District is a great way to learn about the district and gain the skills and experience that will help them begin a career in teaching.

“Substitute teachers play a vital role in schools,” said Jeffery Richards, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. “It is inevitable that staff will need to be absent from time to time, and substitute teachers not only supervise students but also ensure continuity of learning in the event of a teacher’s absence. Because of their importance, we are taking steps to ensure adequate coverage in all our schools by making Ken-Ton a prime destination for substitute teachers. Additionally, we often hire these individuals as short-term leave replacements, which often leads to a probationary appointment.”
