What are Social Skills Groups?
I frequently get asked what I work on in my social skills groups with students. My goal is to improve person to person interactions by working on:
- Verbal and nonverbal communication
- Following directions
- Taking turns
- Understanding different feelings and acknowledging other’s feelings
- Problem Solving
- Coping Skills and Emotion Regulation
- Organization
- How to be a good friend
We enhance these skills through play, modeling appropriate behaviors, and social emotional curriculum targeted to each skill. Some groups may focus on a few specific skills mentioned above with targeted group curriculums while other groups will take the whole year to work on all of the above depending on the students’ needs.
